Tucked in the upper reaches of Chamoli, the Valley of Flowers erupts each monsoon into a slow-moving river of colour. This gentle trek is perfect for first-timers who still want a proper Himalayan story.

Day-by-day itinerary

    Haridwar → Govindghat

    Drive along the Alaknanda through Rudraprayag and Joshimath.

  2. 2

    Govindghat → Ghangaria

    10 km paved trail alongside the Lakshman Ganga.

  3. 3

    Ghangaria → Valley of Flowers → Ghangaria

    Full day exploring the valley with a naturalist.

  4. 4

    Hemkund Sahib & back

    Steep climb to a glacial lake and gurudwara at 14,100 ft.

  5. 5

    Ghangaria → Govindghat → Joshimath

    Descend and drive to Joshimath for a warm bed.

  6. 6

    Joshimath → Haridwar

    Long drive back with tea stops in Karnaprayag.

Things to carry

The honest list — 8 kg on your back is plenty for this trek. Layers still matter — nights drop below 5 °C.

  • Ankle-length waterproof trekking boots (worn in)
  • Down or synthetic jacket rated to −10 °C
  • Waterproof-breathable shell jacket
  • Two full sets of thermal base layers
  • Three pairs of merino or synthetic socks
  • Insulated + liner gloves, wool cap, sun cap
  • Category 3 UV sunglasses (Category 4 on snow above 4,000 m)
  • One-litre insulated flask + one reusable water bottle
  • Headlamp with fresh batteries
  • Personal medication + basic strip (paracetamol, ORS, band-aids)

  • Peak bloom is mid-July to mid-August, right in the monsoon window. Early July is greener with fewer flowers; late August fades but skies clear.
