Overview

Often called the ‘Valley of Gods’, Har Ki Dun sits at 3,566 m inside the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary and follows a historic route more than 500 years old. Seven paced days link Sankri, the wooden village of Osla and the cradle-shaped valley below Swargarohini — history, culture and high meadows in one trek.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

    Dehradun (640 m) → Sankri (1,920 m)

    190 km, 8–10 hour drive by traveller into the Tons valley.

  2. 2

    Sankri → Taluka (2,050 m) → Osla (2,600 m)

    12 km drive to Taluka, then 13 km / 5–6 hour trek beside the Supin to Osla village.

  3. 3

    Osla → Kalkatidhar (3,200 m)

    6 km / 4–5 hour climb through forest to the meadow camp at Kalkatidhar.

  4. 4

    Kalkatidhar → Har Ki Dun (3,566 m) → Kalkatidhar

    12 km round trip, 6–7 hours. Enter the valley below Swargarohini and return to camp.

    Kalkatidhar → Osla

    6 km / 3–4 hour descent back to Osla for a warm village night.

    Osla → Taluka → Sankri

    13 km / 4–5 hour trek to Taluka, then 12 km / 1 hour drive to Sankri.

    Sankri → Dehradun

    190 km, 8–10 hour drive back to Dehradun railway station.

Things to carry

The honest list — 8 kg on your back is plenty for this trek. Layers still matter — nights drop below 5 °C.

  • Ankle-length waterproof trekking boots (worn in)
  • Down or synthetic jacket rated to −10 °C
  • Waterproof-breathable shell jacket
  • Two full sets of thermal base layers
  • Three pairs of merino or synthetic socks
  • Insulated + liner gloves, wool cap, sun cap
  • Category 3 UV sunglasses (Category 4 on snow above 4,000 m)
  • One-litre insulated flask + one reusable water bottle
  • Headlamp with fresh batteries
  • Personal medication + basic strip (paracetamol, ORS, band-aids)
  • Government photo ID (original)
