Overview

Sahastra Tal is a remote nine-day expedition to a cluster of alpine lakes at 15,000 ft above the Bhadwari valley. The trail passes through Gairi Haldugad forest, the vast Kush Kalyan and Kyarki Bhaggyal meadows, and finishes with the high crossing to Lamb Tal and Sahastra Tal.

Day-by-day itinerary

    Travel to Bhadwari

    Drive to Bhadwari and begin the climb into the valley.

    Climb to the forest camp

    Continue the ascent through Gairi Haldugad forest.

    Through Gairi Haldugad forest

    Trek through the vast alpine forest section.

  4. 4

    Kush Kalyan meadows

    Cross the open meadows of Kush Kalyan.

    Kyarki Bhaggyal

    Trek to the high Kyarki Bhaggyal meadow camp.

  6. 6

    Hike to Lamb Tal

    High-altitude hike to Lamb Tal, followed by exploration.

    Sahastra Tal lake cluster

    Explore the Sahastra Tal lake cluster.

    Descend to Silla village

    Long descent back to Silla and on to Bhadwari.

Things to carry

The honest list — 8 kg on your back is plenty for this trek. Layers still matter — nights drop below 5 °C.

  • Ankle-length waterproof trekking boots (worn in)
  • Down or synthetic jacket rated to −10 °C
  • Waterproof-breathable shell jacket
  • Two full sets of thermal base layers
  • Three pairs of merino or synthetic socks
  • Insulated + liner gloves, wool cap, sun cap
  • Category 3 UV sunglasses (Category 4 on snow above 4,000 m)
  • One-litre insulated flask + one reusable water bottle
