Overview

The Kuari Pass trek, also called the Curzon Trail, offers the widest panorama in the Garhwal Himalaya. Over six days you climb from Joshimath through oak forests and open meadows to a 12,750 ft pass facing Nanda Devi, Dronagiri, Kamet and Hathi-Ghodi Parvat.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. 1

    Rishikesh to Joshimath / Pipalkoti

    250 km scenic drive along the Alaknanda to the trek base.

  2. 2

    Joshimath to Gulling Campsite

    6 km trek through oak and rhododendron forest to the first camp.

  3. 3

    Gulling to Khullara Campsite

    6 km climb to the open meadow camp with big mountain views.

  4. 4

    Khullara to Kuari Pass and back

    10 km summit day to the 12,750 ft pass and return to Khullara.

  5. 5

    Descend to Tugasi / Dhak, drive to Joshimath

    Descend and drive 250 km toward Pipalkoti / Joshimath.

  6. 6

    Joshimath to Rishikesh

    250 km return drive.

Things to carry

The honest list — 8 kg on your back is plenty for this trek. Winter trek: pack for −15 °C at camp.

  • Ankle-length waterproof trekking boots (worn in)
  • Down or synthetic jacket rated to −10 °C
  • Waterproof-breathable shell jacket
  • Two full sets of thermal base layers
  • Three pairs of merino or synthetic socks
  • Insulated + liner gloves, wool cap, sun cap
  • Category 3 UV sunglasses (Category 4 on snow above 4,000 m)
  • One-litre insulated flask + one reusable water bottle
  • Headlamp with fresh batteries
  • Personal medication + basic strip (paracetamol, ORS, band-aids)
  • Government photo ID (original)
